29 Apr 2018 FBA News from the Members
A number of FBA members have participated in the BHA’s Sales Integrity Review process during 2018, and in January 2019 FBA Chairman and Vice Chairman Oliver St Lawrence and Richard Frisby, joined by Council member Richard Brown and the Secretary General met with BHA CEO Nick Rust and Justin Felice to receive their summary of the Sales Integrity Review conducted during the second half of 2018. We look forward to the BHA’s conclusions due later in 2019.
The FBA welcomed new member Charlie Dee and further new members are expected later in the year.
FBA members reported a buoyant year on the Flat. In particular 2018 was a memorable year for Howson & Houldsworth Bloodstock whose highlights included yearling purchase Phoenix of Spain becoming a live contender for the 2019 European Classics, the acquisition of stallion prospect James Garfield for Rathbarry Stud, and several high profile pinhooks notably the sale of a Golden Horn yearling at Tattersalls Bk 1 for 550,000gns with Abbeylands Farm. As of 1 January 2019, Matthew took over as Principal of the Agency with Geoffrey remaining as a Consultant. The FBA would like to record our thanks to Geoffrey who remains the FBA’s Honorary President.
SackvilleDonald also enjoyed an amazing strike rate and were responsible for purchasing a staggering 25 Group winners in 2018. Six of which won at Group One level; Glorious Forever, Harlem, Time Warp, Redkirk Warrior and Glorious Empire. They also posted nine Group 2 wins and ten Group 3 wins.
The National Hunt agents also reported a strong year.
The Highflyer Bloodstock team of Anthony Bromley and David Minton had a stellar season on the track in the 2017-18 Jumps season with 26 Grade 1 victories being notched up by their purchases. This bettered their previous-best of 19 winners achieved in the 2008/09 season. This astonishing haul was made possible by the likes of top-class performers ALTIOR, BUVEUR D’AIR, MIGHT BITE, POLITOLOGUE, BRISTOL DE MAI, L’AMI SERGE, and FOOTPAD. The current 2018-19 season has continued at the same pace with 4 Grade 1 winning purchases at the recent 2019 Cheltenham Festival led by ALTIOR and FRODON along with the impressive novices TOPOFTHEGAME and PENTLAND HILLS.
Tom Malone was absolutely delighted to have bought 2018 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Native River. Other Grade 1 winners include Black Corton and the sadly ill-fated Finian’s Oscar, Delta Work, Dynamite Dollars and Quel Destin plus this year’s Champion Bumper winner, Envoi Allen.
Richard Venn Bloodstock enjoyed further successes with outstanding National Hunt race mare LA BAGUE AU ROI, purchased un-raced as a yearling in France and winner of the 2018 Kauto Star Novices Chase Grade 1 and the 2019 Flogas Novice Chase Grade 1, Leopardstown. Several stallions were purchased in 2018 including Group 1 winners The Grey Gatsby and Elm Park, plus US Gd 3 winner Seabhac, a son of the exciting sire of sires, Scat Daddy.
